In 1922, Evangelist Charlie Nelson came to this community to share and spread the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. During this time, he resided with Ms. Maggie Fleming.
The first gospel meeting was held in a tent beside Tom McDaniel's store on Needmore Road. During this first meeting, Brother Henry Rousseau and Brother George Stringer were baptized.
For the next two years, services were held at the home of Brother George Stringer. During these two years, due to the sponsorship of the Corinth Church of Christ, Brother Franklin Roden, Brother Red Freeman, and Brother Frank Payner, and land located next to Rock Hill School, donated by Brother George Simmons, construction was started on the sanctuary.
The building was actually built in 1924 by church members who contributed their particular talents. The building was a one-room, large wood structure with a large bell in the steeple, and a large wood stove, which produced warmth for the members in winter.
Brother Charlie Nelson spoke the first Sunday of each month at Rock Hill, until the early 40's. Baptisms were held at Wrenches Ford on the Stringer Farm, which is now Powell Road.
Brother Quincy Carter, became our next full-time minister in 1940. Rock Hill was responsible for helping establish Kannapolis Church of Christ, Salisbury Church of Christ (Thomas Street) which started with the baptism of 18. This was due to the help and insistence of Brother John McLaughlin. He believed that even though the surrounding community was strongly Methodist-supported, the gospel of Jesus Christ would stand firm. Brother McLaughlin, worked hard with the Thomas Street Church of Christ keeping the work going strong up until his early death.
Brother Nelson worked hard in this area over the years. Other congregations established by his leadership were Cappernium Church of Christ, Redland Church of Christ, and Belmont Church of Christ, now Highland Acres Church of Christ in Statesville.
Rock Hill's next full-time minister was Brother Robert Lyons, who came to us in 1962. During his ministry, many great works were accomplished. A new edifice and fellowship hall were erected. He was responsible for encouraging Brother Allen Simmons and Brother Jamie Houpe to become ministers. Starting out at Rock Hill with a very small salary, money was not his goal, but a genuine service to God came first in his life. After about 30 years of faithful service, God called him home.
Our present full-time minister, Brother Anthony Reese came to us in 1994. Tony has, with the grace of God, and much prayer, survived a major medical illness. Brother Reese continues to labor here with us at Rock Hill.
